Stepping into the pool for the first time is a big moment for both children and families!
At the Y, we believe preparing your child for their first swimming lesson should begin with confidence, comfort and lots of fun.
Here are our top 8 tips to get ready for a positive first swimming lesson.

1. Start the Excitement Early!
In the days leading up to the lesson, chat with your child about what will happen in the pool. Use language that is encouraging and include specific descriptions about what to expect. Focus on the positive experiences like meeting their Learn to Swim Instructor, meeting new friends and playing in the water. This helps children understand what to expect and reduces anxiety about the unknown.
Ask simple questions like, “What’s your favourite thing about water?” and let them tell you as their enthusiasm will grow with each chat.

2. Visit the Pool Together
If you can, take your child to see the pool before their first class. Let them watch other children having fun, and hear the sounds of being at a swimming pool. Familiar surroundings make big experiences feel smaller and safer.
.
3. Packed and Prepared
Being comfortable in the water starts with the right equipment. Make sure your child has: a comfortable swimsuit, a swim shirt, towel and water bottle. You can buy goggles at the front desk.
A handy tip – pack their bag together. Walking them through packing their bag with these items will build a routine of being prepared for their swimming lessons.
4. Keep It Light and Positive
On the day, keep your energy upbeat. It’s normal for children to feel shy or hesitant, and it’s also normal for them to feel excited. Saying things like “Let’s go have some fun!” and “You’re doing so great!” reinforces confidence more than pressure or instructions.
Avoid saying things that might create worry, like “Don’t be scared” instead, focus on the fun parts.
5. Know That We All Learn Differently
It’s completely normal and very common for children to feel nervous and not get in the pool during their first few lessons. For some children, sitting on the side of the pool and watching is how they begin to feel safe. Everything is new and it can take time for them to process this.
Ellie reassures families that this is all part of the process. “I’ve been an instructor for many years, and a child’s first day at swimming lessons is always an exciting, or sometimes scary experience,” she says.
“Every child responds differently. Some jump straight in and trust away. While others may sit on the side of the pool for the entire lesson. It’s really important that families understand that both reactions are completely normal and don’t define how a child will learn or progress in the program.”
Our instructors are trained to work slowly, patiently, and at your child’s pace, using gentle encouragement and consistency to build trust. While it may not happen straight away, children almost always do get in when they are ready, and once they do, progress often happens very quickly.

6. Stay Close
For young children especially, knowing their caregiver is just metres away makes all the difference. Stay in the designated waiting area, smile, clap and celebrate every step.
.
7. Let the Educator Lead the Experience
Our qualified swim teachers are experts at building children’s comfort and confidence in the water. They know how to meet each child where they’re at. Trust their guidance, and if you have questions about your child’s experience, your instructor will be happy to chat after class.
8. Make It Routine
Repetition creates confidence. Once your child starts lessons, treat the pool as part of their routine, just like school, storytime or dinner. The more familiar swimming becomes, the more relaxed and enthusiastic they’ll feel.
At the Y, we believe swimming should be fun, safe and confidence-building. Preparing your child emotionally and practically sets them up for success and it’s an opportunity to share in their excitement and wonder.
