The Y’s Learn to Swim program is designed to help babies, children, and adults build confidence, safety, and strong swimming skills for life.
In the Northern Territory, swimming is more than a sport, it is an essential life skill. Our Learn to Swim program supports every swimmer through a clear progression pathway in a safe, welcoming environment.
A Clear Progression Path for Every Swimmer
Our Learn to Swim program follows a structured progression chart that guides swimmers from water familiarisation through to advanced stroke development and water safety skills.
The Y’s national Learn to Swim curriculum is developed by qualified swimming teachers with years of expertise in swimming education and technique.
Babies and Toddlers (6 months to 3 years)
Early lessons focus on comfort and confidence in the water with a parent or carer in the pool. Swimmers build familiarity through floating, gentle submersion, kicking, reaching for safety, and supported movement.
Levels such as Starfish, Periwinkle, and Minnow help little ones learn that water is a safe and enjoyable space.
Starting early makes a difference (but it’s never too late to start your Learn to Swim journey!)
“Swimming lessons are just as important as any other school subject – the earlier they start learning the better,” says Rosie, Swim Teacher at Parap Swimming Pool.
Preschool and Early School Age
As confidence grows, swimmers begin to work independently. Skills include jump entries, floating on front and back, kicking, basic arm movements, and short distances of freestyle and backstroke.
Levels like Tadpole, Goldfish, and Flying Fish help children develop coordination, breath control, and self-rescue skills.
“Swimming down is a skill, pushing up is a skill, holding breath is a skill, blowing bubbles is a skill. It’s not just sinking and floating.”
School Age and Advanced Levels
For older children, lessons focus on endurance, stroke refinement, and water safety. Swimmers progress through Octopus, Sardine, Turtle, Salmon, Tuna, Dolphin, and Shark levels, learning freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly, survival swimming, and emergency response skills.
These levels prepare swimmers for real-life water situations, not just lap swimming.
“No one learns to swim in one day,” Valerie says. “If a skill isn’t done confidently multiple times and without prompts, it hasn’t actually been learned.”
Why Progress Looks Different for Everyone
Every swimmer learns at their own pace. Moving up a level is not about rushing, it is about confidence, consistency, and safety.
Parents often ask why progress takes time. Rosie explains that extra practice beyond the 30-minute swimming lesson can really help development and learning.
“When you book swimming lessons with us, you can practice your swimming for free anytime, any day. That extra practice is super important for development.”
As a result, having more time to practice builds confidence and helps skills become second nature.
Free Practice Swimming at the Y Pools
In addition, one of the biggest benefits of learning to swim at the Y is access to free recreational swimming while enrolled in lessons. Yes, you read that right. If you enrol in our swimming lessons, you get to practice your swimming at any of the Y-managed pools for free!
This gives families the chance to:
Practise skills taught in lessons
Build confidence outside structured class time
Make swimming part of everyday life
“If you want your kids to think of swimming as a part of life, then make it a part of your life” says Valerie.
More importantly, qualified staff are always on site to answer questions and support families during practice sessions.
Fun, Safe, and Supportive Lessons
Our swim teachers are passionate about creating lessons that are safe, engaging, and full of joy.
“The kids at Parap bring amazing energy, smiles and lots of giggles to lessons,” Rosie says. “We ensure safe, activity-filled lessons with lots of fun.”
Positive experiences in the pool help children build confidence that lasts a lifetime.
Adults Learning to Swim
It is never too late to learn to swim. Our adult lessons support beginners, nervous swimmers, and those wanting to refine their technique.
“I love teaching adults,” Valerie shares. “No matter their background, trying to perfect swimming can be so rewarding. It is such a fulfilling experience to help someone achieve their goal.”
